January 2013 in Review

One month of the new year is already finished. Whammo. I was hoping that 2013 would be a year of quiet contemplation, but already I’ve learned that was a pipe dream. Here’s what I’ve been up to this year so far.

January 2013 in News

  • Adaptation is a Top 10 Title on the American Library Association’s Rainbow List, which recognizes GLBT books for young adults. See the entire list right here, or check out the Top 10 on my Tumblr page. Yaaaay!
  • News alert! If you bought an ebook version of Adaptation before Jan. 17, 2013, there’s an updated version and you should check to see if you need to update yours. Details on how to do that are here.
  • This summer, I’ll be teaching the Genre and YA Fiction workshop at the Lambda Literary Foundation’s Writers Retreat for Emerging LGBT Voices. If you’re an LGBT writer, you can apply to be part of this weeklong immersive retreat. Go here for details.
  • I’m sure you didn’t miss the title and cover reveal for the sequel to Adaptation, did you? Well if you did, you can still scope out what went on behind the scenes at the cover photo shoot. Hint: birds!

January 2013 in Writing

Last month I wrote a short story for Grim, an anthology of Grims’ fairy tales retold, edited by Christine Johnson, which is due out sometime in 2014. (I know! So far away!) I had such fun writing my story, which is my spin on “The Twelve Dancing Princesses.” I can’t wait for you to read it!

January 2013 in Reading

Last month I read advance copies of some fantastic upcoming YA novels. First up, Intuition by my friend C.J. Omololu (coming June 2013), the sequel to Transcendence, a fabulous read that delves into past lives and how they change the present. More about Intuition closer to the pub date!

I also read When We Wake by Karen Healey, a sci-fi novel about a girl who is frozen upon her death only to awaken a hundred years later in a world that is definitely not the kind of future she expects. This book comes out March 5, so you are only weeks away from its chilling awesomeness! More about this one soon, too.

A black labrador dog running through a frosty field

In case anybody wonders if it ever gets cold in California, yes! Check out the frost on the ground as our dog bounds across it. Brrr!

A stack of printed out page proofs from Inheritance by Malinda Lo

Because of the chilly winter weather, I stayed close to home for most of the month, where I worked on (among other things) the page proofs for Inheritance. I love this page!

Since I’ve announced the title of Adaptation’s sequel, now I can show you this page from the Inheritance page proofs: the epigraph. A very important page!

Have a great February, folks!
