Announcing my next book, ADAPTATION!

I have exciting news, everybody! Today I can finally tell you about what I’ve been working on for months, because the deal was just announced in PW’s Children’s Bookshelf:

Kate Sullivan at Little, Brown has bought Morris Award finalist Malinda Lo’s two-book YA series Adaptation. The premise? After an ominous series of mass bird deaths, a girl questions whether she is still human after she undergoes a mysterious procedure, and is torn between feelings for her crush David and a seductive new girl. The first book is due out in fall 2012. Agent Laura Langlie did the deal for world rights except the U.K. and Japan.

Now, this little announcement doesn’t really tell you much about the books! The first book is called Adaptation, and the first thing I want to tell you about it is that I totally came up with the bird deaths thing before all those bird deaths in January. Score!

The second thing I want to tell you is that this is set in the near future United States, but not dystopian near future. It’s set like in 2014. It is not a fantasy, but I do hope it will be fantastic.

Finally, here are a three things that are related to Adaptation:

Exhibit A

Exhibit B

Exhibit C

And now, I should probably get back to writing this book, because it is due soon! Woohoo!

Sounds cool, though it also sounds like an X-Files episode (I don’t know why. Must be an obsessive fan thing.). Can’t wait for it.

Will that poster ever stop giving my inner teenage fangirl a little flutter when I see it? Probably not. Mulder and Scully: still dreamy.

Many congratulations on the book deal! The series sounds great.

I am psyched about this book! I just read Ash for the first time last week, and I adored it. I’m hooked on your work.

OK I can do this, Huntress in 2011, first Adaptation book in 2012! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

The second image reminds me of a dorm room door that’s been decorated, sounds like good times :) Except for the whole birds dying thing so there goes my good times theory…

Well, that’s definitely not a dorm room door. You can click on the image to read the graffiti more clearly. I do not think anyone would write that stuff on a dorm room door. :)

But it is a real place in San Francisco, and I took the picture, and it is in the book!

Congratulations! Having enjoyed Ash so much, I was simply looking forward to Huntress being released soon, and now there’s even more to anticipate. And my X-Files fangirl heart skipped a little beat there too. Great stuff.

I can’t wait for Huntress and now I am even more thrilled for Adaptation!! lol I love the door (can’t wait to see how that is added into the book) it reminds me of a bar i went to and when you walked into the bathroom the whole place was graffitied with names and slang and all sorts of crazy bad things. LOVE IT!!
    congrats!

Malinda, somehow I managed to miss this. Super huge congratulations!!! Also, my copy of Huntress just arrived today, along with its best friend Fury of the Phoenix, so now I am torn as to which I should read first. . .such a nice problem to have. :)

I’m so excited I’ll get to come see you at Books of Wonder in May! Hooray! (Not that we’ll get to chat much then, either, but hey.)

Wow, I can’t wait for this! If it isn’t fantasy or dystopian. . .what is it–contemporary?
