Things I’ve been thinking about lately
Today I do not have a thoughtful blog post for you, but I do have a collection of links to thoughtful blog posts that I’ve been thinking about lately. Since it’s Monday, feel free to procrastinate by clicking on them.
Inclusion — Arthur A. Levine is a fabulous children’s book editor; you may remember seeing his name on the spine of every Harry Potter novel published in the U.S. because, well, he published those books in the U.S. In this post he’s talking about the recent (well, last year) change to the Lambda Literary Foundation’s requirements for who is eligible to win a Lambda Award. (In the past, it was anyone who wrote a book with LGBT themes; now it’s LGBT authors.) There is a very interesting discussion that ensues in the comments that is too complex for me to summarize here in a sentence.
One Way to Stand Up Against Whitewashing — Arthur A. Levine’s colleague, editor Cheryl Klein (whose blog is fab for writers!), suggests a way to support books featuring people of color on their covers. I think it’s a fantastic suggestion, but it requires a lot of organization. Like, grassroots organization, activist style. I don’t have the chops for this, but I’m hoping someone does.
tgibfm! feel the love, baby! — Author and friend of mine Cindy Pon is giving away seven (7!) books featuring characters of color. You have until July 14 to enter, so go now!
Runway Recovery — Author and friend of mine Deva Fagan blogs about five things she learned from watching Project Runway. Who says reality TV is useless? I loved this.
Last but not least, I found this io9 collection of vintage science book covers via Nathan Bransford, and had to share one of my favorites with you:
And now I’m going to stop procrastinating and get to work myself …
