I’m in the Out 100!

Back in August, I went down to Los Angeles for a photo shoot. I couldn’t tell you about it then, but now I can reveal that I’m in Out magazine’s 2009 Out 100!

It is such an honor to be on a list with Sarah Waters (although why did they put her in a janitor’s outfit?!) and blogger Pam Spaulding and, of course, Adam Freaking Lambert! Here’s my page, and here’s the full list.

Here’s my photo:

Let me tell you, having that photo taken was an experience to remember. I flew down to LA from San Francisco just for one day, drove through annoying LA traffic to University High School, and then had my makeup done fast and furious by two (two!) makeup artists. There were like six people standing around (art director, some assistants, makeup people, stylist, etc.) while the photographer (the amazing Jason Bell) told me how to stand in some bushes. Seriously, I thought I was going to look like a freak because I had no idea what he meant by “push your mouth out” (clearly, I will never be a top model).

Anyway, luckily Jason Bell knows how to work with amateurs (me). And the photo turned out to look really nifty. If only I had a styling team with me at all times!

So, if you want to pick up your own copy of Out, the issue should hit newsstands very soon (like maybe this week) and will be available through January.

In other news, I’m in New York, folks! Tonight I’m giving a talk at the New York LGBT Center at 6:00 p.m. If you’re in the area, I hope you can stop by! Books will be available for sale and I’ll do a signing after the talk.

Then on Wednesday, I’ll be reading at the 96th St. branch of the New York Public Library at 4:00 p.m. And on Saturday night, I’ll be at Giovanni’s Room in Philadelphia for their benefit; I’ll be reading at 8:45 p.m.

Meanwhile, I’ve been attempting to record my lengthy trip back East with photos. I may even have a Photo Friday for you on Friday. (I know, so thrilling, right? Ha.)
