Debut Books by Their Covers #6
Every month I like to highlight new releases from the 2009 Debutantes, along with the authors’ thoughts about their covers (first impressions and all that, right?). Last month only two Debs books were released, but they were good ones!
Secrets of Truth and Beauty (Hyperion) by Megan Frazer
After a misunderstanding at school, a former pageant princess who is now significantly overweight finds her strained relationship with her parents gets even more fraught, and she decides to go stay with her older sister Rachel — who her parents always kept from her.
☯
Q: Did you have any specific hopes about what your book cover would look like?
A: I knew I didn’t want a girl with her head cut off, and I didn’t want it to be too pink. Other than that, I didn’t have a strong sense.
Q: What’s your favorite part of your final book cover?
A: I love the colors (that’s magenta — not pink!), and the fonts, and the swirly patterns. The ARCs were more of a muted purple, which was nice, but I think was a bit too melancholy. As it is, there’s the sort of wistful picture, but some brightness, too.
A special note for LGBT readers: I haven’t read Megan’s book yet, but I know that there are some great LGBT characters in this book. I’m looking forward to reading it!
Eyes Like Stars (Feiwel & Friends) by Lisa Mantchev
Where real fairies fly on wires and pirates sail the painted seas, Beatrice Shakespeare Smith will have to take Center Stage so that the next curtain call won’t be the last.
☯
Lisa didn’t have a chance to answer my cover questions, but I’m pretty sure she loves that cover. Who wouldn’t? All the online buzz has been fabulous about this novel, and just in case you don’t believe me, guess who blurbed it? Suzanne “Hunger Games” Collins, that’s who!
“All the world’s truly a stage in Lisa Mantchev’s innovative tale, Eyes Like Stars. Magical stagecraft, unmanageable fairies, and a humourous cast of classical characters form the backdrop for this imaginative coming-of-age.” — Suzanne Collins
That’s good enough for me!
