Debut Books by Their Covers #4 – Plus the most awesome giveaway ever

Every month I like to feature the most recent releases from my 2009 Debutantes compatriots, but June snuck up on me and I discovered that this month I’ve only pinned down one author on her cover! Luckily, it’s an awesome cover:

Dull Boy (Dutton) by Sarah Cross

Dull Boy by Sarah CrossSuperpowers are awesome — unless you actually have them, like Avery does. There’s only so much he can pass off as “adrenaline” before people start to get suspicious. Probably it’s best to lie low, so guys in white lab coats don’t come to carry him away, to find out what makes his freakish body tick. Who wants to be vivisected? But flying under the radar becomes a whole lot harder when you can actually fly. It’s dangerous to be different, so for now he’ll pretend to be normal, unremarkable Avery — a dull boy — anything to keep his secret safe.

What he doesn’t expect is the horrifying truth about where his powers came from, who else might have them, and the madness of one villain’s plan to turn this superpowered dull boy into something even more powerful and amazing.

Q: Did you have any specific hopes about what your book cover would look like?

A: I hoped that the cover would indicate “superhero” in some way, without being a photo of a guy wearing droopy tights. And I wanted iconic, heroic colors like red, blue, and black–but I don’t think I ever mentioned that to the designer.

Q: What’s your favorite part of your final book cover?

A: I love the broken title. It conveys the irony of the phrase “dull boy,” and it’s so unusual. I was thrilled when I found out they were going to do that.

There were several other fab books released last month, however, including Aprilynne Pike’s Wings which went to No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list. How’s about that for debut success? So here’s a peek at the other debut books that came out last month — a very nice-looking bunch, I must say.

While I have your attention, let me direct you to an amazing giveaway that’s going on right now at the Feast of Awesome (that’s the 2009 Debs). If you host a Debs widget (featuring many Debs’ books) on your website, you can win an awesome prize pack of nine (9!) books as well as various other goodies like gift cards, bookmarks, swag, etc. Details for this giveaway, which ends at noon on June 22, are right here.

(I’m not in the widget, due to the aforementioned month of June sneaking up on me, but don’t let that stop you!)
