ASH teaser and the British cover

For those of you who live in the U.K., New Zealand, Australia or other former British Commonwealth countries, you’ll see a cover for Ash that is different from the American one. My U.K. publisher, Hodder Children’s Books, recently finalized the Ash cover for the U.K. market, and I am very happy to share it with you:

Ash by Malinda Lo UK cover

What do you think of it? Very different from the American cover, isn’t it?

I am also excited to give you a tiny sneak peek into Ash itself. This teaser text will appear on the back cover of the American edition:

Kaisa turned the pages of the book curiously. “Fairy tales,” she observed. “I have a favorite tale. Do you wish to hear it?” Once again Ash was surprised, and the paring knife slipped and nicked her finger, leaving behind a thin line of blood.

“Be careful,” said Kaisa, and reached out to take the knife away from her. Ash relinquished the knife, raising her finger to her mouth, and the huntress slid the blade under the rosy skin of the apple, peeling it off in a single smooth strip.

When Kaisa finished the story, the food lay untouched between them, but the apple had been sliced neatly into six wedges, the skin coiled like a ribbon around them. “Please,” said the huntress, “will you eat?” Ash picked up a piece of the apple and bit into it, and the flesh was crisp and sweet.

Two words: knife skills. ;)

I LOVE this cover with passion, Malinda. I’m impressed by your writing, too. I have a strong gut feeling that you’ll become as popular as Meg Cabot. Chasing Ray just caught my attention on your “Sites of the month.” If you haven’t already done so, have your publisher send Colleen Mandor your book so she can interview you. She’s a master at asking questions that go deep.

I’m glad you like it! You are SO kind — if I became even a smidgen as popular as Meg Cabot I think I would flip out. I do love Colleen’s blog, thanks for the suggestion!

I love both covers. I don’t have a favourite, it’s too hard to pick. I loved the teaser! I also vote more teasers.

I think both covers are beautiful – I’m wondering which one more accurately reflects the book’s style.

Thank you for the excerpt – can’t wait to read the whole thing! Congratulations.
