Pre-ordering ASH

Some great things have happened lately, and I’ll start with this: I’ve gotten the full book jacket for Ash, and I’m happy to share it with you here:

Spiffy, isn’t it?

I’ve also recently gotten some messages and tweets from people asking me where they can pre-order Ash. First of all, these are totally awesome messages! They make me beam. :D

The short answer is: You can pre-order Ash from Amazon.com (U.S.), Amazon.ca (Canada), or Amazon.co.uk (although the U.K. site has the wrong publication date right now; Ash comes out Sept. 1 everywhere).

The longer answer is: You can also pre-order it from your local independent bookseller by going to IndieBound.org*. This site  allows you to find a bookstore near you where you can pre-order Ash. It takes a couple of more steps than Amazon, but there are several reasons you might consider doing it.

For one thing, you’re supporting a local business, which is good for your community. You’re also supporting a dying breed — independent booksellers — who in turn support writers of all kinds. Indie bookstores often stock a much more diverse collection of books than, say, Wal-Mart or Costco, where many, many people buy their books. Very few books have any chance of getting stocked at Wal-Mart or Costco. I can pretty much guarantee you that barring some miracle, you will not find Ash there. But you might find it at your local bookstore — especially if you pre-order it.

If they get enough pre-orders (or even one pre-order, who knows what it takes?), it may make them take notice and order a few more. And having books on the shelves of your local bookstore means that others may see the same book and buy it.

Besides, picking up your book from your local bookstore means you get to go to a bookstore. For me, there’s nothing better than stumbling upon a book that I never would have known to search for on Amazon, but just happened to be poking out from a bookshelf near my elbow.

* Note to international readers: IndieBound does include at least some Canadian bookstores, but it doesn’t include the rest of the world. If you’re outside the U.S. and would like to recommend better ways to find independent booksellers in your part of the world, please leave a comment!

Chapters isn’t really an indie store, but thats where i”ll order it through on the off chance I can’t find a good indie store. Sadly, can’t afford to pre order yet, but i’ll keep an eye out for when I can.

I should add that I am also a big fan of libraries, and if you can’t buy a copy of the book for yourself, I definitely suggest requesting it for your library, and then read it for free! I know many libraries will order books at the request of their patrons, and that is another way to support authors and books. (not just mine!)

I was delighted to find that my local bookstore in Chicago Women and Children First had already ordered 6 copies and I’ve got one of them reserved.
