Photo Friday: Irish Beach

Today I’ve got more photos from my trip up to Mendocino County. We stayed in a tiny hamlet known as Irish Beach – there’s really nothing there except the beach, which you get to by walking down a beautiful stretch of Highway 1.

Doesn’t that look exactly like the road that Mulder scrawled that “X” on in the pilot episode of The X-Files?

A smaller, very steep road branches off from Highway 1 to take you down to the beach. This was the vision we saw early Sunday morning:

The beach itself was covered with mist that morning. Mist and giant pieces of driftwood that looked like a graveyard full of giants’ bones.

Driftwood or bleached bones?

To complete the eerie atmosphere, piles and piles of seaweed that look like long, dark green snakes dotted the beach itself, washed up from the ocean. They were extremely weird.

Despite the creepiness of that seaweed, though (or perhaps because of it), I enjoyed Irish Beach. Everything was going fine until 007 decided to act up.

Next week, I promise food photos. Meanwhile, enjoy your weekend!

    Hi Malinda,

These pics are beauiful are you still taking them with your camera phone or did you graduate to a nicer model? They are amazing especially the driftwood and then the alien landscape. It reminds me of Alexandra Hedison’s work, you should check her website out.

    Take care,

    Sue

    Hi Malinda
Beautiful photos (again…going to have to think of something original to say next time!).
The photos make me think of Pirates Of The Caribbean, especially the last one. Almost-familiar creations in unexpected places. Like newly hatched Krakken babies crawling into the water.
    Kelp is truly amazing stuff.

Hey Sue — No, I wasn’t using my camera phone. I have a Canon something or other point and shoot. :) I’d love to get a “real” camera sometime, but I feel like this one works well enough for me.

Hi Inger — Thanks! The seaweed was truly weird. I’ve never seen so much of it clumped together like that before.

OK, I’m just gonna come out and say it: I’m in love with 007.

Oh, wow. I love the way the sun streams through the trees. And don’t those funny seaweed-like things look like octopi? Definitely a little creepy… but this place is gorgeous! I’d like to transport myself there now, thank you very much…
