Read this: THE BLUE SWORD by Robin McKinley

The Blue Sword by Robin McKinleyThis is just a heads up to let you all know that I’ll be leading the May Book Club discussion at The Enchanted Inkpot on May 25. The book we’ll be chatting about is one of my all-time favorites ever, Newbery Honor book The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley. I wouldn’t be exaggerating to say that I consider this book to be foundational to work as a writer. Bonus: It’s an awesome read!

If you haven’t read it yet, here’s why you should:

  1. Whenever we think of “Harry” and “fantasy,” Harry Potter likely comes to mind, but the main character of The Blue Sword, Harry Crewe (a girl!), came first!
  2. The Blue Sword is chock-full of action: Harry must learn how to wield a sword (that blue one of the title), ride magnificent horses, and defeat a horrible, no good, very bad villain.
  3. But it’s also got a great romance: The book begins when Harry meets the powerful, mysterious Corlath, King of Damar, who kidnaps her at night and rides across the desert with her (whee!). Don’t worry, he’s entirely honorable.

So get your own copy from IndieBound or your local library, and join us at The Enchanted Inkpot on May 25!

I have a copy of this at home. Tried to read it once when I was younger, but couldn’t get into it (although The Hero and the Crown is one of my all-time, enduring favorites). Will try to read The Blue Sword again, though!
