Photo Friday: Streets of San Francisco (mostly!)

Earlier this week I took my camera into San Francisco with the goal of taking some pics in my old neighborhood. This was the first photo I took:

What is it? Well, it’s the ceiling that was over my head the moment I discovered that Ash is now available for preorder on Amazon.com! WOOT! No, the cover and book description haven’t been uploaded yet, but so what!

This is also a great opportunity for me to tell you that the official publication date for Ash is September 1, 2009. That actually means books might start appearing in bookstores a couple of weeks earlier, because the “release date” (the date the books start shipping from the warehouse) is August 12. Yes, my stars have aligned, and Ash is totally gonna be a Leo. Just like me!

So, after I stared at my mostly blank Amazon.com listing for awhile, I left my seat (can you guess where I was?) and went for a walk. One of the first things I saw was this pedicab chained to a parking meter.

The back of it was painted so nicely!

Then I crossed Dolores Street, one of my favorite streets, and hurriedly snapped this photo while in the middle of the road.

Shortly after that, I came to a sight that truly exemplifies (at least for me) the streets of San Francisco:

Random piece of furniture accompanied by a single shoe on the sidewalk. Things I wanna know: Who threw that chair out and why? Did anybody famous sit on it? Why only one shoe? Did the owner keep the other one? These things shall remain unknown.

After my trek through the streets, I met up with my friend Sarah Pecora to discuss potential future Lo-Down video blogs. However, we got sidetracked by one of our favorite pastimes (bitching) and also ordered copious amounts of Chinese takeout. Yum.

I was going to end this week’s Photo Friday with the takeout, because really, what could possibly top that? Well, this blurry camera phone photo taken at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair last month:

Look at that! That’s a giant poster of my book cover next to Grace Lin‘s beautiful Where the Mountain Meets the Moon! This is my first sighting of Ash (at least in poster form) out in the world without me. (Thanks to my editor for sending the pic!) Yes, my book got to go to gorgeous Italy, while I was staying home and working on its prequel.

Oops, I didn’t mean to let that out of the bag just yet. More info next week! Have a great weekend!

Even though all your photos are pretty, I got most excited about seeing your takeout ;-)

Thanks for the pics of San Francisco, they’re bringing back fond memories. I wish I would still live in that beautiful city, I miss it a lot.

Congrats on ASH being on Amazon! My girlfriend/life-partner Damarys is an Astrologer. Says August 12th is an excellent date because the moon will be in Taurus. On Sept 1st, the moon will be in Aquarious (groups, associations, community, hopes and wishes, and social issues). Something about the 11th house? (lucky house that deals with the public above the horizon with no moon void of course).

I don’t know a thing about Astrology… just repeated what she expressed and I’m sure I didn’t do a great job. Looks as if the stars are definately with you! Good luck!

Thanks for the astrology update, Mayra! Tell Damarys I very much appreciate the reading. :)

Congrat’s, Malinda, on ASH! I look forward to reading it. I know what you mean about the Amazon page. After my book, Seeking Sara Summers, came out last Fall, I checked the page daily to make sure it wasn’t just a dream.

The reviewing part is a little scary though. Thankfully, mine have been very positive. Be sure and ask all your fans to write reviews after they read it! I will make a point to do that for you, as well.

All the best,
Susan

Thanks Susan! I am a little nervous about reviews, but that’s to be expected.

Added Ash to my Cart now!
WooHoo!
I visited the US with my parents when I was 8 to do the west coast holiday thing and for me the best part of the trip wasn’t Disneyland or Universal Studios or any of the other “touristy things”, it was simply the city of San Francisco.
The fog, the hills, trams, architecture all captured my imagaination more than anything at Disneyland (except maybe for the Its A Small World Exhibit-but I’ve always had a thing for Mary Blair’s work).
Love the poster by the way.

Thank you so much for adding the book to your cart! Yay! And I was meaning to take more photos of hills, but that would have involved climbing to the top to getting the most dramatic shots, and I was running late. I will do that next time.

Congrats on getting Ash on Amazon!

I am almost half finished with reading Ash and am enjoying it immensely. I was very excited when I was able to pick up an advanced copy at the recent Texas Library Association conference. Lots of authors come to the conference every year, I hope you will find your way there next year.

Kim, thanks for stopping by my site! I am so glad you are enjoying ASH so far. I would have loved to be at TLA this year — fingers crossed for next year. I will be at ALA in Chicago though. If you are there and you see me, say hi!

I hope you are aware of the censorship issue regarding Amazon’s recent discriminatory practices against LGBT books, and their failure to do more than claim it is a glitch or a “ham-fisted cataloging error” or “mistake.” http://www.edrants.com/amazonfail-a-call-to-boycott-amazon/

Yes, I was really troubled by #amazonfail over the weekend. I truly hope that their explanation is correct (and that they will issue an apology). Unfortunately, that doesn’t change the fact that getting your book on Amazon still is a big step in the life of an about-to-be-published author, so I’m leaving my post as is. But I definitely advocate buying books from your local independent bookseller instead. I always do! In San Francisco, I love to visit Book Passage, Books Inc., A Different Light (in the Castro) and Borderlands (in the Mission). You can find your local indie by going to http://www.indiebound.org.

I recognize that pedicab! I pass it every day on the way to work. It makes me sad that no one seems to cover it up when it’s raining.

By the way, I think something changed with the RSS feed when you updated your layout. I only noticed you’d updated again when I followed the link from your latest AfterEllen column. I don’t know how many other people read your blog mainly via RSS, but they might be missing out.

Thanks, Miriam. Yes, the RSS feed changed — I had a link at the top of my home page for the first month, but since then have taken it down. I couldn’t find any way to put a forward notice on my old RSS feed.
