Hot. Female. Mechanics.

2008 December 8
by Malinda Lo

You know, sometimes Mondays just suck. This Monday wasn’t my favorite Monday of all time, but it got inordinately better when I got Sarah Lyon’s 2009 Female Mechanics Calendar in the mail. Because you know me — I love a girl in uniform. Especially if it has grease on it.

Before I proceed any further, let me lay my cards on the table. I know Sarah Lyon. I met her through my friend Carolyn Coquillette, owner of Luscious Garage, a hybrid-only garage in San Francisco (it was recently profiled very flatteringly in the New York Times). Carolyn also happens to be in the calendar; check out her page here:

The calendar is an ongoing project for Sarah Lyon, a photographer based in Louisville, Kentucky. I think her photos rock. And I think that it’s fantastic that we can have a calendar celebrating women who work with machines. There aren’t enough of them (women or calendars). If you’re looking for something to get your friend/girlfriend/sister/brother for Chrismukkah, go to Sarah’s website and get a copy for the bargain price of $20.

And if you’re in San Francisco, stop by Luscious Garage on Dec. 13 for the 2009 Female Mechanics Calendar release party and meet both Sarah and Carolyn. (I’m planning to be there too, but hey, you already know me, right?)

Before I end this post I’ll leave you with this image of Jessica Dulong of New York, working on a fireboat. I love this photo because it reminds me of Kaylee on Firefly. Also, note the grease!

Happy holidays.

    Very nice.

    Good thing I don’t have a 2009 calender yet.
