I am Malinda's aunt (her Dad is my brother). I got quite a jolt seeing my Mother's photo on Malinda's web site just now. After reading Malinda's November 16, 08, Notes and Queeries column on afterellen.com, I wanted to say First of all: I am so proud of you Malinda! Second, I would like to thank all of the people who wrote such supportive comments on this particular article. I read Malinda's web site and scan afterellen.com in order to keep up with what she is doing and to learn more about the gay and lesbian community. All of my particular friends are liberal (suprise?) and support the gay and lesbian rights movement, but some of our relatives are not yet very open minded. To a certain degree our extended family gatherings follow a kind of 'don't ask don't tell' policy, which makes for an odd feeling. No one dares say anything against the LGBT community in front of Malinda's parents and myself, but .... Third, Malinda, I feel that given NaiNai's state of health (she suffered Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome and dementia) at the end of her long and adventurous life, you made the right decision for her peace of mind. I also believe you are absolutely correct to think that when she was entirely herself and in command of all her faculties, she would certainly have supported you 100% had you come out to her then. I know for sure that she would be absolutely thrilled to know you are publishing a book. Perhaps, in some way, she does know.
Love you, Catherine Lo
